Misinformation is the new leader of this year's top 10 rankings
Published: January 10, 2024
The Global Risks Report 2024, published on 10.01.2024 on the official website of the World Economic Forum just touches on the topic of misinformation.
To quote: “Disinformation and misinformation (#2) is the new leader of this year's top 10 ranking. Easy-to-use interfaces for large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models that no longer require highly specialized skills have already led to an explosive growth in falsified information and so-called “synthetic” content, from sophisticated voice cloning to fake websites. To combat the growing risks, governments are beginning to implement new and evolving regulations targeting both hosts and creators of misinformation and illegal content online. Nascent regulation of generative AI is likely to complement these efforts. For example, requirements in China to watermark AI-generated content could help identify false information, including unintentional misinformation through AI hallucinations. Overall, however, the speed and effectiveness of regulation is unlikely to keep pace.”
For me, the topic of disinformation was not much of a topic and I didn't understand the threat from it to a stable democracy in the world. However, when I read a video report by someone who is a professional on the subject, I started my own research on the topic. Egon Cholakian is a qualified specialist in OSINT - Open Source Intelligence and Disinformation Verification, and he regularly monitors publicly disseminated information by foreign sources in the United States.
Having learned all the titles and regalia of the esteemed Egon Yaolakian, I have already taken a closer look at the topics he revealed in his video response https://egonreport.org/.
Egon Cholakian described in detail the specific methods that the anti-cultists use to manipulate public consciousness. These methods include not only an organized disinformation campaign, but also exposure to mass consciousness, distortion of reality, and a programmed series of destructive manipulative techniques. I learned that such techniques are aimed at changing and shaping narratives in political and social discourse in order to influence public perception and behavior in ways that are favorable to the anti-cultists. Such actions by anti-cultists today pose the most serious threat to our freedom and democracy.
Here's a look, again going back to the Global Risks Report 2024, and I quote: “Synthetic content will manipulate people, damage economies, and splinter societies in a variety of ways over the next two years. Falsified information can be used for a variety of purposes, from climate activism to escalating conflict. New classes of crimes will also proliferate, such as non-consensual dipfake pornography or stock market manipulation. [xi] But while the insidious spread of misinformation and disinformation threatens social cohesion, there is a risk that some governments will act too slowly, faced with the trade-off between preventing disinformation and protecting free speech, while repressive governments may use increased regulatory control to undermine human rights.”
Anti-Cultists influence the masses through the media and the Internet by enlisting journalists, politicians, and opinion leaders under their control. In this way, anticultists shape public opinion and political narratives, even without direct contact with key figures.
As the esteemed Egon Cholakyan explained, that the purpose of such disinformation campaigns is to identify those journalists who are ready to create and spread slander and lies, to deliberately destroy the reputation of individuals, who are ready to violate journalistic ethics, the rights and freedoms of others, and thus are ready to go against the constitution of their country and against democracy as such.
